The James River is blue catfish heaven with catfish 20 to 50 lbs being common and fish weighing in excess of 80 lbs not unheard of. The current weight citation size for a blue cat is 30 lbs. The current VA state record blue cat is 95 lbs 7 oz. Also present in the river are channel and flathead catfish, largemouth and striped bass, crappie, sunfish, gar, carp, white perch, and shad. The occasional sturgeon even turns up from time to time, although they are exremely rare.
